UI/UX Designer — Train Station Tycoon
You design and style the UI for Train Station Tycoon, from the main menu to management screens, working remotely on a freelance basis with the team developing the game in Unity 6.
The role
Train Station Tycoon is the upcoming game from Abyssal Interactive: a management game where you take charge of a railway station, either solo or with friends. From a small stop to a 30-track hub, players assign platforms, manage staff, and handle unexpected events in real time. Developed using Unity, the game will be released on Steam (PC, Mac, Linux).
In a tycoon game, the interface is the gameplay: schedules, platform assignments, finances, staff, and incidents are all managed via screens that must remain legible when thirty trains arrive at once—and enjoyable to use during four-player sessions.
We are looking for a freelance UI/UX designer to handle the design and visual styling of the game's interface, including flows, wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, component systems, and integration-ready assets. You will work remotely, collaborating directly with the Technical Director, and see your interfaces come to life in-game as updates are released.

Your missions
- Map out player journeys (initial session, day-to-day management, crisis situations, multiplayer) and design clear flows, from the main menu to management screens.
- Design wireframes and high-fidelity mockups for key screens: station dashboard, platform assignment, schedules, finances, staff management, incident notifications, and co-op lobby.
- Define and document a consistent UI system: grid, typography, colors, iconography, components and their states, animations, and feedback.
- Produce final UI assets (icons, frames, buttons, sprites, etc.) ready for integration into Unity.
- Participate in playtests, analyze feedback, and iterate on screens causing pain points.
What we're looking for
- A portfolio of game interfaces (or apps) demonstrating your work on information hierarchy, readability, and UI states.
- Strong UI/UX experience, ideally within the management, strategy, or simulation game genres.
- Proficiency in Figma (or equivalent tools): components, variants, auto-layout, and prototyping.
- Solid graphic design fundamentals: typography, color, iconography, and layout. You are capable of producing polished assets, not just wireframes.
- Autonomy, reliability in meeting deadlines, and clear, consistent remote communication.
- Legal status allowing for freelance invoicing (e.g., micro-enterprise, limited company, etc.).
- Fluency in French or English.
Nice to have
- Experience with Unity: UI Toolkit or uGUI, integration of custom screens, prefabs, and UI animations. A definite plus, though not mandatory.
- Familiarity with management and tycoon games, and a clear understanding of what makes their interfaces effective or ineffective.
- Knowledge of motion design principles (transitions, feedback, micro-animations).
- Sensitivity to accessibility (contrast, font sizes, color blindness).
- Experience with localization (text expansion, multi-language support).
What we offer
- A 100% remote freelance role with a schedule you manage yourself.
- A clear initial scope, followed by long-term collaboration if both parties are happy.
- Direct access to the game designer and developers: your screens are discussed, implemented, and tested—not just filed away in a drawer.
- An independent project and a small team where your work is visible and credited.
The hiring process
- Application: the form below, with your portfolio and your rates. We reply within two weeks.
- Video call (30 min): your background, the way you work, the project and its constraints.
- Paid test: one management screen to design from a brief, to check we speak the same language.
- First scope: we start on a first set of screens, with a scope and a quote agreed together.
Apply
A portfolio is essential: a link to Behance, Dribbble, your website or a PDF, ideally with game interfaces or complex applications. State your daily rate or pricing model, and your availability.
